When deciding what to put on your bucket list, most people list sky-diving, scuba diving, or bungee jumping. For high schoolers in Grace, Idaho those aren’t an option. With not many options to choose from, fluming, hiking, exploring Black Canyon, golfing, and swimming at 23 and 40 are the most popular bucket list items.

Fluming is the most popular activity to participate in. The Last Chance Canal Flume was built in 1891 and was used for carrying irrigation water diverted from the Bear River. It includes a 1,496-foot tunnel through lava rock, which is 12 feet wide and 9 feet wide. The original concrete arch was replaced in 1947 with a steel version. It collapsed in 2003 and had to be repaired. Today many people find entertainment in floating over the river when the water isn’t too high. It is considered illegal, but that doesn’t stop most people, including the cops.

Black Canyon is also a popular spot for hiking, fishing, and kayaking. There are many trails to hike down and a large bridge that crosses over the river. This area is rated as one of the best whitewater rafting locations in Idaho and is known for its long, obstructed, and sometimes very violent rapids. Most people in Grace avoid the rafting but enjoy hiking the fun trails to see the incredible scenery in the picturesque canyon.

The most popular places to swim in the Bear River are 23 and 40. They are located in Black Canyon and can be difficult to get to. Despite the fact, people still climb down the steep rock to enjoy the pools. There are waterfalls and rocks that people jump off into the deep water. Many people come from all over including Pocatello and places in Utah. When driving by during the summer season, people can usually be found swimming in the water to cool off.

Gabby Clements stated, “My favorite activity to do in Grace is go hiking on the Black Canyon trails. I would also like to go down the flume.” Cali Johnson also stated,” There are a lot of fun things to do in Grace considering how small it is. My favorite activity to do is go swimming at 23. Other students also love motor biking, golfing, attending a movie in Soda Springs, and enjoying the hot pots in either Lava Hot Springs or Maple Grove.

Grace, Idaho may be small but there are many interesting and unique activities to participate in. Even though there isn’t a lot to choose from, there are a lot of things to do that are unlike anything you can find anywhere else.
