Not everyone at this school knows about this important event, but the GHS cheerleaders are going to competition this year! And that is not everything, they are not competing only once, they are going to two competitions! These two competitions will be the Highland competition and Districts. Highland will be February 2nd and Districts will be February 9th.

After four years without going to competition, the cheer team has decided that they will compete at Highland to warm up for districts. Our cheerleaders are determined to show all their hard work in districts,  making sure that everyone is ready to do their best, with the help of two dedicated coaches, Tina Bitton and Stephanie Rindlisbaker.

The team is composed of Heather Mansfield as captain, with one other senior, Taelor Froehlich; five juniors: Susanna Cooper, Brinklee Holyoak, Jessica Corder, Maria Font and Maite Alcaide; two sophomores: Tenleigh Hall, Berkey White; and two freshmen: Jillian Smith and Alexis Weaver. All of these ladies are ready and excited for competition.

We took the opportunity to ask to members of the team about the routine for next month and how they feel with all the new stunts they are practicing.

Interview to Brinklee Holyoah and Tenleigh Hall:

Q: How do you feel about going to competition this year?

Tenleigh:I am nervous but confident. Because we have been practicing so hard but so have the other teams.

Brinklee: I’m very excited and I think we can do well.

Q: Do you think the cheer team has a chance to win?

Tenleigh:Yes! Because we are family and we can work really good together.

Brinklee: Yes. If we work hard we have a good chance to win.

Q: Is it hard to do cheer and get good grades at the same time?

Tenleigh:It was at first but you get used to it.

Brinklee: Not for me. Because I’ve been doing it my whole life with other sports.

Q: What is the hardest part of stunting?

Tenleigh: Making sure that the flyer doesn’t hit the ground if the stunt goes wrong.

Brinklee: Being able to stunt when your arms and your legs are too tired.

It sounds like they are all really busy practicing excited to compete and we wish them the best for  both competitions. Let’s go Grizzlies!
